What are the most common types of damage?
1. Gravel Damages
- Chip marks on the car body
- Cracks on the windshield
How to avoid: It’s very hard to avoid these damages when driving in Iceland so we highly recommend taking the gravel protection for minimum coverage.
2. Dents due to someone dinging your car door
How to avoid: Try to avoid parking too close to other cars
3. Scratches on the car body
How to avoid:
- Don’t use cleaning brushes at gas stations
- Don’t write on the car body with your hands
- Try to avoid tree branches/bushes
4. Damages to doors due to strong winds
How to avoid: It can be quite windy in Iceland so it’s important to follow these points to avoid damages:
- Park against the wind so it’s blowing the door shut (not open)
- When opening the door on a windy day always hold on to it with both hands as the wind can suddenly blow the door out of your hand
- Don’t leave the door open unattended as sudden wind gusts can blow it up quicker than you can manage to grab a hold of it
This type of damage is most common from September to April
5. Damages to underwagon
- Plastic covers
- Sill (rocker panel)
How to avoid: Don’t drive on forbidden roads or off road. Violations are subject to fines

Travelling in Iceland
Is it safe to visit Iceland now?
Iceland is always safe to visit. It’s among the safest countries in the world, even if you’re travelling alone. Of course, you need to use common sense and take caution when you’re on the roads and near the main natural attractions. In the winter you should check road safety websites and the weather forecast before heading out in our Cozy camper!
Winter travelling
When you rent a camper from us you don’t have to worry much about winter travelling in Iceland. We have 4×4 campers with great heating system and equipment. Of course they have snow tires in winter. Always be careful on the roads, check if they’re closed before departing and check the weather forecast. But besides that, simply have fun with your winter travelling in Iceland!
What must you see in Iceland?
There are so many must-see places in Iceland, they’re impossible to list. It all depends on how much time you have, which parts of the country you’re visiting, etc. We recommend a mix of the natural wonders, small fishing villages along the coast, Reykjavík city (or the other big ones like Akureyri, Egilsstaðir and Ísafjörður if you’re in the vicinity) and quirky little museums or attractions in each part of the country. Check out our blog for more suggestions!
Do I need shots to go to Iceland?
Nope, you shouldn’t need any shots in particular before coming here but you should probably consult with a medical professional and not take our word for it, just in case.
How dangerous is Iceland?
Iceland isn’t a really dangerous place to visit unless you’re reckless and don’t show nature the respect it deserves. It’s not like Disney World where you have signs warning about any possible danger. So often times accidents happen when people go to close to edges of cliffs, aren’t careful enough on the roads, go off walking paths, get lost etc.
What do you wear in Iceland?
Well, that depends on the season, the weather and where you are in Iceland! In the summer you need to bring everything from shorts and t-shirts to thick winter coats. In the winter you better be prepared for anything. Icelanders are more often than not underdressed because they’re used to the cold weather and don’t mind it as much. So it’s a fun contrast during summer to see an Icelander wearing shorts in the Laugavegur shopping street and a tourist next to him that looks like he’s going to Everest!
Is Iceland expensive to visit?
What do I need to know before going to Iceland?
The basics: Nearly every Icelander speaks good English, Iceland is technologically advanced and we have a great mobile reception in most places except maybe the highlands. In the winter some roads may be closed. You need to prepare for every kind of weather, even in the summer.
How long do you need to visit Iceland?
If you live in Europe, coming to Iceland for a long weekend is fine. But if you need to get on a long plane ride and want to thoroughly explore Iceland and drive around the whole island we recommend 2-3 weeks. That way you can stop at all the quirky and interesting places in Iceland not everyone gets to see.
What should I bring with me to Iceland? – SUMMER
It’s good to have layers when coming to Iceland. You never know how the weather will be and it can change a few times a day so it’t good to be able to layer up and down depending on the weather. The basics you would need to pack during summer are:
Base layer shirt
Warm sweater (fleece, wool or other)
Jacket that is wind and waterproof
Pants that are flexible, comfortable and relatively warm
- If you are coming from a warm climate or plan on traveling the highlands you may want to pack a pair of thermal pants (to wear under your regular pants)
Pants that are wind and waterproof (to wear over your regular pants)
It is unlikely you will need to bring shorts but if you are coming in the end of May, June, July or August you may want to pack a pair just in case.
Shoes with a good grip that are waterproof
Its good to have something to cover your ears as the wind can be quite cold if you go hiking or something of the sort (earband or beanie)
You shouldn’t really need gloves during the summer but if you will be staying outside for a long period of time, especially if it is windy or wet gloves could be something you’d want to pack as well.
It’s always good to have a pair of warm socks as well.
Note: if you are coming in the spring or fall you may want to go the middle route of the summer and winter suggestions
What is the best time of year to go to Iceland?
Of course, the summer is an excellent time of year to go to Iceland. But, you can come here all year, and yes, you can camp all year in our Cozy campers. We have a great heating system in our campers and have a 4×4 version so it’s completely winter-proof! The spring, summer and fall are easier seasons for travelling in Iceland though.
I have 10+ days to travel around Iceland – Where should I go?
If you have 10+ days to travel you should be able to explore whatever your heart desires. There is so much to see and do in Iceland and with additional time you can plan your dream trip so you won’t miss a thing.
I have 6-9 days to travel around Iceland – Where should I go?
If you have 6-8 days to travel you should be able to drive all the way around the country
6 days: Is enough time to travel the ring road but you may have to sacrifice the golden circle
7 days: Is the perfect amount of time to travel the ring road including the golden circle
8 days: With one additional day you can add Snæfellsnes peninsula to your itinerary
9 days: If you plan to do activities that take a whole day you might want to add an additional day for that to your itinerary.
Note: These suggestions are made for optimal weather conditions. If you are traveling during winter you may want to add a day or two to your travel itinerary for flexibility due to weather and road conditions.
I have 3-5 days to travel around Iceland – Where should I go?
If you have 3-5 days to travel you should be able to explore the southern part of the country
3 days: Is enough time to travel the south coast (up to Höfn) but you may have to sacrifice the golden circle
4 days: Is the perfect amount of time to travel the south coast (up to Höfn) including the golden circle
5 days: With one additional day you can add Snæfellsnes peninsula to your itinerary
Note: These suggestions are made for optimal weather conditions. If you are traveling during winter you may want to add a day or two to your travel itinerary for flexibility due to weather and road conditions.
Where can I find a place to SHOWER on the road?
You can find Showers at:
- Campsites
- Geothermal Swimming Pools (Located in every small town around Iceland)
Note that campsites generally charge a small fee for using the showers so we recommend going to the swimming pools, they do cost a bit more than the campsite showers but are however way nicer as you can go for a swim, enjoy in the hot tub or sauna for as long as you want.
Here you can find the location of swimming pools in Iceland: Geothermal Swimming Pools
Where can I find TOILETS on the road?
You can find Toilets at:
- Campsites
- Gas stations
- Tourist attractions
- Restaurants
Note that some places charge a small fee for using the restrooms
Where can I find information about CAMPSITES in Iceland?
Here is a map of Iceland with all the campsites available at each time:
Note that you can click on each campsite to see information about opening times, prices and facilities they offer

Safe Travel
How to travel safely in Iceland
Safe travel in Iceland is something we care deeply about. Please read up on safe travel in Iceland before you come. You can check out www.road.is and www.safetravel.is for instructions and videos.
